The above map shows the location of the EDISTO Sediment Cores collected in 1963. The heat map represents the relative magnetic sucseptibility measured for each core. Magnetic Susceptibility is controlled by the amount of Ferro Magnetic Minerals located in each sample. MS values have been related to the source of the sediment. Those sediments with higher MS values most likely originated from Iceland where more basaltic rock is found. Those cores with lower MS values likely originated from Greenland. MS value is also related to the advance and retreat of the Greenland Ice Sheet. More samples with lower MS values means the glacier was retreating and deposition from Greenland was greater than that of Iceland. If the Ice sheet was advancing, there would be less deposits with lower MS values and more with higher MS values.:
