Boston residents can call 311, based in the mayor's office, anytime to request non-emergency city services and information.

There were 12,964 requests for non-emergency city service through Bos:311 in East Boston in 2017. The issues mentioned most include street cleaning, highway maintenance, sanitation, traffic, building, trees, street lights, recycling, housing and animals.

Traffic

Traffic related issues caused the most complaints.

Enforcement & abandoned vehicles got the most frequent complaints from the East Boston residents, 2,313 in all.

Boston officials explain, "Abandoned vehicles issues are are safety hazards and they blight neighborhoods."

Among all East Boston neighborhoods, Eagle Hill has seen the most complaints.

Another traffic-related problem is highways. Three highways go through East Boston: State Route 1A, Interstate 90 (I-90)/Mass Turnpike, and State Route 145.

There were 1,388 requests for highway maintenance, among which many happened along three routes - Meridian Street, Bennington Street (MA 145), and Chelsea Street.

Environment

Judging from the 311 requests, street cleaning is the second most complained about issue by East Boston residents with 1,671 requests.

Residents of Eagle Hill and Jefferies Point sent more requests than Orient Heights. Maverick Street residents have seen an unusually large amount of requests about street cleaning.

Recycling and Sanitation service requests were also popular. Orient Heights residents showed more passion for these services than street cleaning.

Public Equipment

Street lights, Signs & Signals, Park Maintenance & Safety were also the subject of frequent complaints, which added up to nearly 1,700 requests.

There were more than 1,000 complaints about housing and building issues, mostly in Eagle Hill and Jefferies Point.
