BurnItNow works with CDs and DVDs. It burns data and ISO images, and blanks rewritable RW media. You can create Audio CDs from WAV files and burn pre-authored DVD-Audio and DVD-Video. BurnItNow is a graphical frontend to the command line tools suite cdrtools by Jörg Schilling et al.
BurnItNow's window consists of four parts: the menu bar, the session settings, several project modes in tabs, and a bar indicating the currently used space at the bottom:
The available menu items are few and easy to understand.
In the
menu you can open the panel and the application.provides options related to cached image files that are created when you build an image that is then burned to disc.
/system/cache/, but you may want to change it to some other partition with more free space.
opens a file dialog in which you can set the folder that is used for those cached images. By default, it points toMake sure the volume with the cache folder mounted before starting to work with BurnItNow, that it has enough free space and isn't read-only.
When your project is to burn a data disk or DVD or to clone a disc, you need at least the amount of the data/disc size as free space on the cache folder's volume. Burning an Audio CD or an existing ISO image, or blanking a disc, doesn't use cache at all.
shows the cache folder in a Tracker window, in case you want to have a look or copy an image somewhere else for later use.
removes all image files from the cache folder.
is a setting that can be toggled with a checkmark. Activated, it automatically clears the cache every time you quit BurnItNow.

does just that. It is a good way to remind you that your CD has finished while you're busy elsewhere.
With the
For best compatibility with stand-alone CD players, a speed of 4x is recommended.
When cloning, the disc is read out with a speed of 10x. In our tests, increased speed resulted in ever more read errors.
Below checkmarks and speed slider are two popup menus.
First is the recording mode. It's either (actually "Session at once" (SAO)) where the burning is done in one go for the whole disc and it's fixated at the end. With the laser is turned off after every track and the disc isn't closed automatically.
With BurnItNow's current feature set, you're probably good with always using DAO.
Before coming to the various Project modes, a quick word on the size bar that's at the bottom of the window (except in Blank RW-disc mode).
The size bar is color-coded for the most common mediums:
CD-650 (green), CD-700 (yellow), CD-800 (orange), CD-900 (blue), DVD5 (beige) and DVD9 (purple).
It turns red when the project size exceeds the maximum capacity of the largest medium (CD-900 for CD mediums, DVD9 for DVD mediums).
It only shows the medium capacities that are relevant to the current mode: when you're on the Audio CD tab you won't see the DVD sections, when on the Audio/Video-DVD tab you won't see all the CD sections.
Whenever you change your project, i.e. choose a folder to burn or drop another WAV file for an AudioCD, the size bar is updated.
The color of the size indicating bar corresponds to the medium your project still fits on.
Note: The size bar only shows a best estimate. It doesn't take into account the data in extended BFS attributes and there can be a slight size difference when copying data from another file system to ISO 9660.
After you've built an image, the bar is updated with the size of the resulting ISO image, which should then be pretty accurate.
Rest assured, though, at the latest when trying to burn the disc, the space is checked and if the data won't fit on the inserted disc, the writing is aborted before it's started.
The info box on the left shows how much space is still left on the medium and the absolute size of your project (again, a best estimate until an actual image was built). If you're over the maximum capacity of the largest medium (CD-900 for CD mediums, DVD9 for DVD mediums), it shows by how much you're over the limit.
Below the session settings are the different project modes of BurnItNow sorted in tabs. Each mode shows a number of buttons and a bold status line suggesting the next step for burning your project. Below that is a large area where cdrecord and the other commands working in the background print out their messages.
In Data disc mode, you first use
Next you click to create an ISO image of that folder. Depending on the number of files and their size and the speed of your hard disk that may take some seconds.
Lastly, you check your session settings one more time, insert a blank disc, and click to start the writing.
To burn an audio CD, you first add all tracks by either drag & dropping them on the window or from a file dialog after clicking ↑ / ↓ buttons until you're satisfied. Remove tracks by selecting them and either press DEL or right-click and choose .
. These have to be WAV files (16 bit, 1411 kbps)! You can re-order them by dragging them around or use theA track is played back by double-clicking or pressing the ► play button. The selected track(s) will be sent to your preferred media player.
You can change the ratio between the info view to the left and the tracks view to the right by dragging the splitter handle between them around. You can even collapse one of the views completely.
For best compatibility to stand-alone players, select a speed of 4x.
Finally, check your session settings once more, insert a blank disc and click .
To write an ISO image file to a CD or DVD, click
and select the image to burn. Then check your session settings, insert a blank disc and click .BurnItNow can burn standards conforming Audio-DVDs and Video-DVDs, but they have to be pre-authored first, i.e. there needs to be a folder containing only an AUDIO_TS and a VIDEO_TS folder with the authored data. If there are other files and folders around, they'll go on the DVD, too, and some players may object to that...
Then it works like described for Data discs.
You first use to select the folder containing VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS. The folder's name will be used as the default label for the disc, limited to 32 characters.
Next you click to create an ISO image of that folder. Depending on the size of your project and the speed of your hard disk that may take some seconds.
Lastly, you check your session settings one more time, insert a blank DVD, and click to start the writing.
Blanking a disc has currently some issues under Haiku. Depending on your hardware, it may just not work. You can try to enter your computer's BIOS and set ATA instead of AHCI for your controller, but that doesn't guarantee success either...
But you can at least try and start by choosing the type of blanking from the popup menu. Not all devices support all types. You may have to choose
which is slowest. From the cdrecord documentation:All | Blank the entire disk. This may take a long time.
Fast | Minimally blank the disk. This results in erasing the PMA, the TOC and the pregap.
Session | Blank the last session.
Track | Blank a track. | |
Track tail | Blank the tail of a track.
Unreserve | Unreserve a reserved track.
Unclose | Unclose last session. |
Now insert the RW disc to blank and click
. Keep an eye on the output in the text area below to see what cdrecord had to say of your choice of blanking type. This mode is for making a 1:1 copy of a data disc.
You start by inserting the disc to clone and click on . The disc will be ejected when it's completely read out (at a fixed 10x speed). Now insert a blank disc, check your session settings and click .
Note, currently BurnItNow can only clone data discs. To copy an audio CD, you mount the disc with Tracker, copy the WAV files to your hard disk and burn them with BurnItNow in 'Audio CD' mode.
Data, Image and Audio/Video DVD mode: You can drag & drop the folder/image to burn instead of using the
button that opens the file dialog.Data, Image and Audio/Video DVD mode: Once a folder/image is selected, clicking on its path to the left of the buttons (or under the disc label) opens its location in Tracker.
Audio CD mode: You can drag & drop folders containing WAVs to add them all in one go.
Audio CD mode: Use a speed of 4x for best compatibility with stand-alone players.
